Fruit tree

Lychee

A slow-to-fruit tree, but a summer luxury worth the wait.

Litchi chinensis

EdibleFruit Tree

Why it works here

Lychees love our hot summers and mild dry winters — cool nights in December/January are what trigger flowering.

Care

Deep infrequent watering, acidic soil, mulch heavily. Withhold water in late fall/early winter to encourage flower initiation.

Common problems

Erratic bearing — some years light, some years heavy. Manage expectations, not the tree.

Common questions

Why isn't my lychee flowering?

Lychees need a cool, dry period to initiate flowers. Warm wet winters delay or skip bloom entirely — nothing you can do but wait.
